TThe New Zealand Telangana Central Association celebrated a vibrant Telangana Bonalu festival on Sunday 16TH July at the Papakura Ganesh Temple. The occasion witnessed an exceptional gathering of many community leaders including several members of Telangana community. The event was graced by the presence of New Zealand Cabinet Minister, Priyanca Radhakrishnan, along with MP Helen White, Kanwaljit Singh, Siva Kilari, Rahul Chopra, Navjet Sarna, Kharag Singh, Narendra Bhana, Dhanshukh Lal, Jeet Suchdev, Sunil Kuncha, Yatish Wadera, Srilatha Magatala, Sunil Kaushal and several other community leaders. The highlight of the program was the traditional offering of Bonam to Mahankaali, the revered deity.

The highlight of the program was the traditional offering of Bonam to Mahankaali, the revered deity.

The 9th edition of International Yoga Day was celebrated across the globe on 21st June 2023 and the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a group of several hundred Yoga enthusiasts from 184 countries at the UN headquarters to commemorate the day in New York. The Yoga Day sessions were organised across the globe in all towns and cities in India, the land of Yoga, and here in New Zealand as well. Auckland was the busiest place, organising several World Yoga Day events in the different parts of the city.

Almost 200 people participated in the festivities which took place at the Thiru Subramaniyar Aalayam Temple, Mangere, Auckland. The purpose of the event was to bring together New Zealand’s diverse communities, strengthening of race relations and highlighting the vibrancy of our communities.

Hindu Youth New Zealand (HYNZ) and New Zealand Hindu Students Forum (NZHSF), divisions of Hindu Council of New Zealand (HCNZ), hosted a unique Marae Stay at Apumoana Marae, Rotorua. For many participants, it was the first time they experienced the traditional pōwhiri, being welcomed onto and staying at a marae while understanding the importance of tangata whenua (people of the land).

Major upgrades to rail lines across Auckland will pave the way for more frequent commuter trains when the City Rail link opens and will help future-proof the rail network for decades to come.

The $330 million Rail Network Rebuild will see sections of rail lines across the city temporarily closed over the coming years, so that the rock foundations under the tracks can be removed and rebuilt.

At the first glance he appears to be an unassuming person, a man of few words and very down to earth. No one, even in their wildest dreams can think of a person who lived in New Zealand for almost 9 years as overstayer after arriving here in March 1989 on a nine-month visitor visa. After a lot of struggles for survival and regularly evading getting deported for such a long period of time, he was finally deported by the immigration authorities back to India in November 1999, a total of 10 ten years after arriving in the country.

Dr Upendra Dutt Saklani is a name that has become synonyms with his horticulture and kitchen garden expertise in New Zealand for past 15-16 years. Dr Upendra Saklani moved to New Zealand at the age of 65 to join his children who were already settled in New Zealand in 2006. New Zealand was altogether a different world for him and as he describes it, he felt like he was on a different planet.

Dr Saklani says it was an absolutely amazing experience for him after having moved to Southern hemisphere and experiencing the Sun movement, season change and vegetable growing in reverse order from Northern Hemisphere. Dr Saklani says his background and experience in horticulture came handy to help the needy people with little or no knowledge. He has been helping such people and many other organisations who promote organic vegetation. Currently he is helping his son who runs a horticulture farm near Paerata on the outskirts of Auckland.

Film Bazaar is the largest content market in South Asia; held for the 16th time in 2022 and for the first time in an offline format in the last two years. One of the objectives of the market is to encourage creative and financial collaboration between the South Asian and global film industries. Film Bazaar is organized by India’s National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). Over 550 delegates from 39 countries participated in Film Bazaar Online in 2021.

The Auckland Council Youth Advisory Panel’s End of Term Report (2019-2022) was presented to the Council’s Parks, Arts, Community and Events (PACE) Committee on Thursday, 22 September 2022.

The report was presented by Murali Krishna Magesan, President of Hindu Youth New Zealand and co-chairperson of the Youth Advisory Panel with Amy Irvine, co-chairperson of the Cross Panel Climate Change Working Group. Britain was a multi-religious, multi-denominational and pluralistic society now and there were a substantial and growing number of non-believers. For a monarch, all subjects should be equal, while titles like this seemed to create a class structure and were highly irrelevant in 21st century; Hindu statesman Rajan Zed stated in Nevada (USA) today.

Moreover, monarchy should not be in the business of defending the faith. If some still thought that there was need to defend the faith, it should be left to individual religions and denominations and organizations of non-believers; Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated.

New Zealand’s leading university, the University of Auckland, recently announced an extensive range of new scholarships for Indian students, with some worth up to $20,000.

With the Pacific country’s borders now fully open, the university is keen to get Indian students back on campus so has launched more than 200 scholarships, totalling almost NZD $1.5 million, for 2023. Applications for the University of Auckland India High Achievers Scholarship open on 10 October, and both undergraduate and postgraduate students can apply.
