The Uttarakhand Association of New Zealand celebrated commemoration of 10 years of the organisation on Saturday 15th July at Auckland War Memorial Hall. President of the organisation Chetan Joshi said his community is delighted to announce the successful completion of 10 years of dedicated community service. To commemorate this milestone, a grand Uttarakhandi program was organized on the auspicious occasion of Harela. The event received immense support and participation from the wider community including esteemed guests Cabinet Minister Michael Wood, MP Melissa Lee, and MP Damien Smith.
The Uttarakhandi program showcased the rich cultural heritage of Uttarakhand and served as a platform to unite the Uttarakhandi community in New Zealand. The event highlighted the vibrant traditions, music, dance, and cuisine of Uttarakhand, captivating everyone in attendance.
HARELA-festival is an old tradition in the Himalayan region of India that symbolises new harvest and rainy season. Today it has become to a common practice in that part of the country to attribute a slogan of “Save the Environment” to HARELA. Celebrating Harela in New Zealand is an attempt of the expats community from Uttarakhand region to create a taste of Uttarakhand in this country.
Chetan Joshi, Chairman of the Uttarakhand Association of New Zealand, expressed his pride in achieving this significant 10-year milestone. He stated, “We are proud of our achievements over the past decade, and we remain committed to preserving and promoting the rich Uttarakhandi heritage among the young generation in New Zealand. Our association will continue working tirelessly to pass on our cultural legacy and traditions to future generations.”
