An initiative by the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS NZ Chapter), Khel Utsav 2026 was successfully organised on February 28, bringing together members of the community to celebrate traditional Indian games, cultural values, and healthy living. Held from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the event saw enthusiastic participation from around 50 people, including children, youth, and adults.
The primary aim of the event was to promote traditional Indian sports and games among the community while encouraging physical activity, teamwork, and cultural awareness. By reviving these time-honoured recreational activities, the organisers hoped to strengthen community bonds and provide a platform where families could engage in meaningful and enjoyable activities together.

Participants ranged from as young as four years old to individuals over the age of 50, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. The event was designed to ensure that everyone could take part, regardless of age or skill level. To facilitate this, participants were divided into two groups-children and adults, allowing for fair competition and teamwork appropriate to each age group.
One of the highlights of the program was the practice of Surya Namaskar, which symbolises discipline, mindfulness, and physical well-being. This activity also emphasised Hindu cultural values and the spirit of community togetherness, setting a positive tone for the rest of the event.
A variety of indoor and outdoor traditional games were organised during the festival. These included activities such as Parichay, an introduction-based icebreaker, and Neta Ki Khoj (Guess the Leader), which encouraged observation and teamwork. Another engaging game, Andhe Ne Vastu Rakhna (Guide Your Team Member), tested coordination and trust between team members.
Participants also enjoyed lively group competitions like an indoor Tug of War and a fast-paced indoor version of Kho-Kho, both of which required agility, strategy, and cooperation. Outdoor games included the popular Indian team sport Lagori, which was enthusiastically received by both children and adults.
Children particularly enjoyed the Cherry Tomato on Spoon Race, a fun and challenging activity that tested balance and focus. Another creative activity, Bharat Yatra, was designed as a family-oriented game where participants explored knowledge about Indian culture, traditions, and cities. This interactive activity added an educational element to the program while keeping the environment entertaining and engaging.
Throughout the event, the focus remained on cooperation, friendly competition, and building relationships within the community. The games generated excitement and laughter, with children especially enjoying the playful challenges while adults participated with equal enthusiasm.
During the program, an Adhikari also shared thoughts on HSS values and principles, highlighting the importance of Aachar (conduct) and Vichar (thought). Participants were encouraged to remain involved in HSS activities and to contribute to society through community service (Samaj Seva) and awareness initiatives (Prabodhan).
The smooth coordination of the event was made possible by the dedicated efforts of HSS volunteers and the Khel Utsav organising team. They ensured that each activity was conducted safely, efficiently, and on schedule. At the conclusion of the event, snacks were served to all participants, providing an opportunity for everyone to relax, interact, and reflect on the day’s activities.
Overall, Khel Utsav 2026 proved to be a great success. The event not only revived traditional Indian games but also strengthened community ties and promoted healthy recreational habits. By blending physical activity with cultural learning, the program created a meaningful experience for families and individuals alike.
Organisers hope to continue hosting similar events in the future to further promote unity, cultural traditions, and active lifestyles within the community. -TIN Bureau
