The spirit of wellness, unity, and cultural heritage was on full display as Bharatiya Mandir and Hindu Foundation jointly celebrated International Yoga Day 2026 on Saturday, 13 June, at Shirdi Sai Mandir in Onehunga. The event marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time that Hindu Foundation joined hands with Bharatiya Mandir in organizing the annual celebration, further strengthening community collaboration and promoting the timeless benefits of yoga.
Bharatiya Mandir, New Zealand’s oldest Hindu temple, and Hindu Foundation, one of the country’s leading Hindu representative organizations, brought together people of all ages and backgrounds for a memorable celebration dedicated to physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The event attracted more than 200 participants, reflecting the growing popularity of yoga and its importance in modern life.
The two-hour programme commenced with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp, symbolizing knowledge, positivity, and enlightenment. This was followed by the chanting of sacred hymns by the Bharatiya Mandir Bal Vikas children, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. The audience was then treated to a series of impressive performances by members of Bharatiya Mandir’s children’s, youth, and senior yoga groups. Their disciplined demonstrations of yoga postures, flexibility, and coordination received enthusiastic applause from those in attendance.
The highlight of the event was the community yoga session led by renowned yoga instructor Prashant Shetty and his team of dedicated and qualified instructors. Participants enthusiastically followed the various yoga exercises and breathing techniques, gaining firsthand experience of the physical and mental benefits that yoga offers. The session catered to individuals of different age groups and fitness levels, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone present.
Several distinguished guests attended the celebration, including Consul Sanjeev Kumar from the Consulate General of India in Auckland. Community leaders and dignitaries present included Bharatiya Mandir President Ambrish Gupta, Hindu Foundation President Neelu Taore, Anurag Rasela, Yugal Parashar, and Jyoti Parashar. Their presence highlighted the importance of promoting health, cultural values, and community engagement through initiatives such as International Yoga Day.

Special appreciation was extended to Shirdi Sai Mandir, which once again generously provided its venue and support for the annual event. Its continued cooperation has played a vital role in ensuring the success of this important community gathering over the years.
The celebration concluded on a warm and cheerful note with a healthy and delicious meal served to all participants by the dedicated volunteers of Sewa International. The gesture was widely appreciated and provided an opportunity for attendees to socialize and reflect on the day’s activities.
Many participants expressed their appreciation for the well-organized programme and shared their enthusiasm for returning next year. Adding to the festive spirit, specially designed Yoga T-shirts were provided by the Consulate General of India in Auckland.
The event successfully showcased the unifying power of yoga while promoting healthy living, cultural awareness, and community harmony. Through their joint efforts, Bharatiya Mandir and Hindu Foundation once again demonstrated how shared values and collective participation can bring communities together in celebration of a tradition that continues to inspire millions around the world.
