Police are investigating a threatening piece of graffiti discovered outside a Papatoetoe school in Auckland, aimed directly at the Indian community. Authorities have classified the incident as a hate-driven offence, underscoring growing concerns about racially motivated hostility in New Zealand.

Former Ōtara-Papatoetoe local board candidate Avinash Kaur brought attention to the graffiti by posting an image online, describing it as deeply disturbing and entirely unacceptable. She stressed that no child should feel unsafe going to school, and no community should be forced to endure such open expressions of hate.

Papatoetoe Central School confirmed in a Facebook post on Saturday that police are actively investigating the matter. Principal Raj Dullabh said the school was both angered and saddened by the message, calling on the community to remain calm as authorities carry out their work. He added that the graffiti has been covered and will be completely removed in due course.

Police Inspector Dave Christoffersen said the incident was reported on Saturday evening, with inquiries still in their early stages. He acknowledged the anxiety and distress such an act would cause, particularly within the Indian community, and said police are focused on identifying those responsible.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the graffiti or those involved to come forward. Tips can be provided by contacting police via 105, either by phone or online, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.-TIN Bureau
