The vibrant spirit of Bihar and Jharkhand came alive in Auckland as the Bihar Jharkhand Sabha NZ (BJSM) hosted a grand celebration of Bihar Diwas 2026, marking not only the state’s foundation day but also a significant milestone—the 15-year anniversary of the organisation in New Zealand. Held at the New Lynn Community Centre, the event drew an enthusiastic gathering of over 300 community members, reflecting the growing presence and unity of the Bihar-Jharkhand diaspora in the country.
Under the leadership of President Bhrigu Bhaskar, General Secretary Ravi Gupta, Treasurer Sujata Kumar, and Cultural Head Rajesh Kumar, the event was thoughtfully organised to showcase the rich cultural heritage and enduring traditions of Bihar and Jharkhand. The celebration stood as a testament to the organisation’s 15 years of dedicated service in preserving cultural identity while fostering integration within New Zealand’s diverse society.

The occasion was graced by the Chief Guest, Dr Madan Mohan Sethi, Consul General of India in Auckland, accompanied by his wife Swagatika Sethi. Their presence added prestige to the celebration, alongside a distinguished gathering of political leaders and Members of Parliament from across party lines, including Dr Parmjeet Parmar, Melissa Lee, Helen White, Rima Nakhle, Nancy Lu, and former MP Michael Wood. Prominent community leaders such as Anurag Rasela, Shivani Arora, Jyoti Parashar, Dhansukh Lal, and Bala Beeram also attended, underscoring the event’s importance within the wider community.


The program featured a series of inspiring speeches that highlighted the contributions of the Bihar-Jharkhand community to New Zealand’s multicultural landscape.Speakers emphasized the importance of preserving cultural roots while embracing diversity, showcasing how the community has flourished over the past decade and a half.
A major highlight of the event was the array of cultural performances that captivated the audience. From classical dance recitals to energetic group performances by the ‘Spirit of Tribe’ group and melodious songs by talented artists and youth participants, the stage reflected the artistic richness of the region. These performances not only entertained but also served as a bridge connecting younger generations with their heritage.


Adding to the cultural immersion were exhibition stalls displaying traditional art, crafts, and heritage items from Bihar, offering attendees a glimpse into the
region’s rich history and craftsmanship. Authentic Indian cuisine further enhanced the experience, delighting guests with flavours reminiscent of home.
Bihar Diwas 2026 event was more than just a celebration, it was a powerful expression of identity, unity, and cultural pride. The event successfully highlighted the growing influence and strength of the Bihar-Jharkhand community in New Zealand, leaving attendees with a deep sense of belonging and a renewed commitment to preserving their heritage for future generations. -TIN Bureau
