Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust, one of the oldest Indian community organisations serving the seniors of South Asian communities, celebrated World Elders Abuse Awareness Day on Saturday 19th June at Athia Trust Community Hall in Onehunga, Auckland. Despite of the wild weather in morning, the programme was well attended by over 400 people. A galaxy of community leaders, politicians, business leaders and representatives from New Zealand Police attended the programme.
Elder abuse is a menace growing globally with an increase seen during Covid-19 period. Older people have the right to safety, respect, dignity, and support. Shanti Niwas addresses these issues through its services like KHUSHI or Happiness. The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is annually celebrated on 15th June to focus global attention on the issue. To commemorate the day, Shanti Niwas celebrated this day as KHUSHI(Happiness) DAY, to raise awareness on the issue within the community, support and empower seniors in situations of abuse and neglect.
Many dignitaries attending the event spoke about the good work that Shanti Niwas has been doing for over 27 years and how they have impacted the lives of hundreds of seniors in the community. The programme was full of fun, entertainment, dances and drama by seniors and some invited groups. All invited guests were served snacks and tea at the beginning of programme packed lunch at the end of programme.
