The New Zealand Indian Sports Association (NZISA) proudly celebrates the successful conclusion of the 63rd New Zealand Indian Hockey Championship (NZI-HC), held over the King’s Birthday weekend and hosted by the Central Districts Sports Club.
Widely regarded as the longest-running Indian community sporting event in New Zealand, the championship has become a cherished annual tradition that unites hockey enthusiasts, families, and communities from across the country. Originally known as the Queen’s Birthday Tournament (QBT) and later the King’s Birthday Tournament (KBT), the event has evolved over more than six decades while continuing to uphold its core values of sportsmanship, friendship, cultural connection, and community engagement.
This year’s championship attracted strong participation, with 12 men’s teams and 5 women’s teams competing in a highly competitive and spirited tournament. Players representing Indian sports clubs and communities from throughout New Zealand showcased exceptional skill, determination, and teamwork, making for an exciting weekend of hockey.
After a series of closely contested matches, the following teams emerged as champions in their respective divisions:
•Men’s A Division – Dhyan Chand Trophy: Wellington Indian Sports Club
•Ladies Division – NZISA Trophy: Bay of Plenty Indian Sports Club
•Men’s B Division – British Airways Trophy: Christchurch Indian Sports Club
The Central Districts Sports Club received widespread praise for its outstanding hosting of the tournament. Known for its welcoming and family-friendly environment, the club ensured that participants and visitors enjoyed a memorable experience both on and off the field. The successful organisation of the championship reflected the dedication of countless volunteers, officials, and supporters who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.
As one of the eight member clubs that form part of the NZISA network, Central Districts joins North Harbour, Auckland, Pukekohe, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Wellington, and Christchurch in maintaining the proud legacy of Indian hockey in New Zealand.
The championship continues to serve as an important platform for fostering lifelong friendships, strengthening community bonds, and promoting the growth of hockey among future generations.
NZISA extends its heartfelt congratulations to all winning teams, participants, coaches, officials, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters whose contributions helped make the 63rd championship a resounding success.
Looking ahead, excitement is already building for the 64th New Zealand Indian Hockey Championship, which will be hosted by the Auckland Indian Sports Club during the King’s Birthday weekend in 2027. The tournament promises another opportunity to celebrate the rich traditions of Indian hockey while bringing communities together through sport and camaraderie. -TIN Bureau
