The Hindu Foundation of New Zealand (HFNZ), a key organisation representing the Hindu community in Aotearoa New Zealand, has announced a newly elected executive team following its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 26 April 2026.
The meeting took place at the Balmoral Community Centre in Sandringham, bringing together members both in person and online. Around 25 members attended physically, with several others joining virtually, reflecting the organisation’s growing reach and engagement across the country. The AGM formally dissolved the previous governing body and confirmed the appointment of a new executive committee to lead the organisation forward.
During the meeting, Treasurer Sanjay Pandey presented the financial report, offering insights into the organisation’s current position, while Secretary Jot Bisht welcomed attendees and acknowledged the contributions of members who participated in the proceedings. The AGM also marked an important milestone with the ratification of the HFNZ constitution. Notably, the organisation was endorsed as an umbrella body intended to represent and coordinate Hindu organisations, temples, and community groups across New Zealand.
In the leadership elections, Neelu Taore was chosen as the new President of HFNZ replacing outgoing President Sunil Das. Her nomination, proposed by Ram Lingam and seconded by Primila Khar, received support from all members present at the meeting. Her appointment signals a new phase for the organisation as it looks to strengthen its role within the community.
The AGM also provided a platform for open discussion, with members raising questions about the financial health of the organisation and exploring ways to increase participation from the wider Hindu community. With Hindus forming a significant and growing demographic in New Zealand, there was a shared emphasis on improving outreach and engagement.
HFNZ operates as a community-based organisation dedicated to promoting Hindu culture, values, and heritage. It also plays an active role in fostering community cohesion and contributing to public dialogue on issues affecting Hindus in New Zealand. The foundation frequently collaborates with other groups such as the Hindu Council of New Zealand and participates in national initiatives, conferences, and cultural programmes.
Organisations like HFNZ are integral to supporting a diverse Hindu population in New Zealand, estimated at over 250,000 people. Their work spans cultural preservation, social service (Sewa), youth development, and advocacy on civic matters. Events such as national Hindu conferences further highlight the community’s contributions and provide forums for discussion and leadership.
Many senior founding member’s stressed the importance of broader community mobilisation. He encouraged greater participation from members to ensure that the organisation remains representative and responsive to the needs of Hindus across the country.
As a non-governmental body, HFNZ continues to position itself as a unifying platform for the Hindu community. With a new leadership team in place, the foundation is expected to focus on expanding its reach, strengthening collaboration, and enhancing its role as a collective voice for Hindus in New Zealand society. -TIN Bureau
