Drivers across Auckland are scoring some seriously cheap fuel thanks to a new player shaking things up. U-Go, a no-frills self-service petrol station, has rolled into town â and it’s pushing prices way down.
Their 91 unleaded is going for just $2.23 a litre (compared to the usual $2.51), and in one suburb, things got wild â a nearby station dropped prices as low as $2.12 over the weekend!
But before you go planning your weekly fuel-up parties, experts are warning: donât expect these prices to stick around for long.
Terry Collins from the AA says U-Go is using a âloss leaderâ strategy â think supermarkets selling milk at cost to get you in the door. Itâs working too. Competing stations like Mobil are slashing prices to keep up.
âIf itâs around $2.12, I donât think itâs sustainable,â says Collins. âBut hey, if theyâre up for a short-term price war, bring it on! Anything under $2.20 is a win for drivers.â
Expect more weekend discounts as these stations test what brings customers in.
U-Go is currently only in Auckland with 9 stations â but word is, more are coming across the country as Caltex sites convert. That means more competition, and hopefully, more savings at the pump.
With global oil prices holding steady and economic pressure keeping fuel companies on their toes, we might be seeing the start of a new era in cheap(er) gas. Fingers crossed.
