Easter Weekend Weather Warning: Wet, Windy Days Ahead for Auckland and the Upper North Island
If you’re planning a relaxing Easter weekend around Auckland or anywhere in the upper North Island, it’s time to pull out those raincoats and double-check your plans. A bout of wild weather is heading our way, and it’s bringing strong winds and heavy rain along with it.
Auckland Emergency Management’s General Manager, Adam Maggs, says now’s the time to start preparing.
“We’ve had a lovely stretch of dry, calm summer weather, but this incoming system is definitely a sign that the seasons are changing,” Adam shares. “As we head into the long weekend, we’re encouraging everyone to do a few simple things around their homes to stay safe and avoid any unnecessary hassles.”
Keep an Eye on the Forecast
MetService has issued weather warnings for Auckland, Aotea Great Barrier Island, Northland, and Coromandel, with both heavy rain and strong winds expected.
“Whether you’re heading out of town or staying local, check the weather forecast before you go—and keep checking. And if you’re traveling to a different region, don’t forget to look at the forecast there too,” Adam advises.
Recent rain has already softened the ground, so there’s a chance of surface flooding if the weather intensifies. Drivers are urged to take extra care, allow more travel time, and most importantly, drive to the conditions.
Add Weather Prep to Your Holiday Checklist
A little prep now could save you a big headache later. Adam suggests taking just 30 minutes to secure your property against the elements:
-
Bring in or tie down outdoor furniture, umbrellas, toys, and trampolines. Strong winds can easily turn these into flying hazards.
-
Avoid putting rubbish and recycling bins out overnight—instead, place them curbside on the morning of collection to prevent them from tipping over and scattering debris.
-
Check your gutters, drains, and downpipes, especially if your home is near trees. Leaves can clog these quickly and cause flooding or leaks.
“Our Healthy Waters team has been out clearing drains around known problem areas,” says Adam, “but homeowners also need to do their part.”
Don’t Forget Your Emergency Essentials
While no one wants to think about losing power over a long weekend, it’s always best to be prepared—especially if you live in an area prone to flooding, slips, or outages.
Here’s a quick checklist to get you started:
-
Have non-perishable food, water, and medications ready
-
Make sure torches, power banks, and emergency radios are charged
-
Know where to find important contacts and documents
