Waitangi Day is a public holiday in New Zealand, and like any public holiday, it means a day off for many. If you’re scheduled to work, you’re entitled to time-and-a-half pay and an alternative day off. Sounds fair, right?

What’s Open?
Good news—most shops, restaurants, cafes, and malls will be open as usual. However, unlike Christmas, Easter, or Anzac Day morning, there are no trading restrictions on Waitangi Day. Some businesses might choose to close or adjust their hours, so it’s always smart to check ahead.

Supermarkets & Malls
If you need to stock up on groceries or fancy some retail therapy, supermarkets and shopping malls will generally be open. Just keep in mind that some might have shorter operating hours.

Watch Out for Surcharges
Running a business on public holidays can be pricey, especially in hospitality, where employees are paid time-and-a-half. To cover those costs, some restaurants and cafes may add a 15% surcharge to your bill.

How to Spot a Surcharge
Businesses that charge a surcharge must let you know clearly. This could be through signs, messages on their website, or even a heads-up from staff before you order.

If You Feel Misled
Think you’ve been charged a surcharge without proper notice? You have the right to lodge a complaint with the Commerce Commission.

So whether you’re dining out, shopping, or just relaxing, knowing your rights and what to expect can help make your Waitangi Day stress-free. Enjoy!
