Nicola Willis Sets Sights on Tourism and Immigration Reforms to Boost New Zealand’s Economy
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! In her new role as Minister for Economic Growth, Nicola Willis has emphasized that revitalizing tourism and creating a more welcoming environment for investors and skilled professionals are key priorities. Willis, who also serves as Finance Minister, shared her vision in an interview with Morning Report, stating that her focus will be on fostering long-term economic growth to make New Zealand a more attractive place to live, work, and invest.
Addressing Inflation and GDP Challenges
Willis acknowledged that while inflation is trending toward manageable levels, the nation’s GDP remains in negative territory, as last reported in December. She noted that bold reforms to rules and regulations are essential to make New Zealand more appealing for foreign investment and economic activity.
Tourism at the Heart of Economic Growth
A significant part of Willis’s strategy involves driving up tourism numbers. She highlighted the importance of making New Zealand’s visa process faster and more efficient, ensuring potential visitors face minimal barriers. Willis revealed that she is already collaborating with Immigration Minister Erica Stanford to address these issues.
Additionally, Willis plans to strengthen partnerships with international airlines to boost the flow of tourists. “We want to attract visitors with wealth and skills, particularly those who can contribute to industries like software and gaming. We need to bring in that money and circulate those dollars within our economy. New Zealand cannot thrive by simply selling to ourselves,” she said.
A Broader Mandate for Economic Development
Willis’s new role, formerly held by Melissa Lee under the title of Minister for Economic Development, marks a shift in the government’s focus. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon personally asked Willis to take on this responsibility following a cabinet reshuffle that saw Lee removed from her ministerial roles.
Willis sees her appointment as an opportunity to inject fresh energy into the portfolio. “My role is about looking forward and making sure we’re positioning New Zealand to compete on the global stage,” she said.
The Road Ahead
With a dual focus on tourism and fostering a business-friendly environment, Willis aims to balance immediate economic challenges with long-term strategies for growth. Her leadership will likely play a pivotal role in shaping New Zealand’s approach to attracting skilled professionals, foreign investment, and high-value tourists in the years to come.
