Air New Zealand has announced the launch of three new non-stop international routes from Christchurch, marking a major boost for South Island connectivity and economic growth. The airline confirmed that direct services to Singapore, Tokyo, and Perth will begin later this year as part of a new partnership with Christchurch Airport focused on expanding international travel opportunities.
The announcement was made during the TRENZ tourism event in Auckland on Wednesday. Air New Zealand chief executive Nikhil Ravishankar joined Christchurch Airport chief executive Justin Watson and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to unveil the new services, which are expected to strengthen tourism, trade, and business links for the South Island.
The move comes at a challenging time for Air New Zealand, which has faced rising jet fuel costs and aircraft availability issues in recent years. The airline recently reduced parts of its flight schedule and increased ticket prices as operational pressures affected profitability. However, it now expects fleet availability to improve as aircraft impacted by engine maintenance problems gradually return to service.
Ravishankar described the new routes as a strategic step to reconnect Christchurch directly with major international hubs in Asia while also improving access to Australia. He said the airline’s focus is on creating stronger national connectivity and delivering long-term economic value for travellers, businesses, and regional communities.
“As New Zealand’s national airline we think about connectivity at a country level — where we can help open up the greatest value and opportunities for customers, for regions, and for the economy,” Ravishankar said.
He added that with more aircraft returning to service, Air New Zealand is now in a stronger position to expand again after several difficult years affected by fleet maintenance challenges.
The airline expects all Boeing 787 aircraft currently impacted by engine issues to return to service by late June, while remaining Airbus fleet disruptions are projected to be resolved by 2027. Ongoing engine maintenance delays have limited the airline’s ability to grow despite strong demand for international travel.
Alongside the route announcement, Air New Zealand and Christchurch Airport signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a long-term partnership focused on sustainable growth and future planning for international services.
Christchurch Airport chief executive Justin Watson called the agreement a landmark moment for the region. He said the addition of several international widebody services would build on the airport’s growing international network and create valuable opportunities for tourism operators, freight exporters, and the wider economy.
Watson noted that attracting new international routes requires long-term collaboration between airports, airlines, and industry stakeholders. He said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening Christchurch’s position as an international gateway for the South Island.
The new direct services are expected to provide important economic benefits by improving access to overseas markets and increasing tourism opportunities. Direct flights to Singapore and Tokyo are likely to strengthen trade and travel connections with Asia, while the Perth route will improve links with Western Australia, an important market for both tourism and business.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston welcomed the announcement, saying it demonstrates how international partnerships can create real opportunities for New Zealand businesses and tourism operators.
She noted that both Air New Zealand and Christchurch Airport took part in the Prime Minister’s recent trade mission to Singapore, adding that the new routes highlight the benefits of strengthening international relationships.
Upston said improved international access would support economic growth, tourism, and export industries throughout Christchurch and the wider South Island.
Flights on the new routes officially went on sale on Wednesday, with strong interest expected from both leisure and business travellers eager for expanded direct international connections from Christchurch. -TIN Bureau
