A Labour Members’ Bill seeking to shine a light on unsafe boarding homes has passed its first reading.
“I’m pleased my Bill has passed its first hurdle and that we’re one step closer to ensuring boarding homes are clean, safe and warm spaces to live,” Labour MP Jenny Salesa said.
“This sector has operated in the shadows for too long. This Bill requires the creation of a national register of boarding homes that will ensure there’s accountability and consequences for landlords running unsafe or unsanitary homes.
“There are countless boarding homes operating illegally throughout the country, many unfit for people to live in. I have seen first-hand the horrific conditions of these homes. No one deserves to live in such poor conditions and it’s time we put a stop to it.
“We all remember the tragedy of Loafers Lodge – the Wellington boarding house that was allowed to operate despite being unsafe. It flew under the radar until lives were lost in a horrific fire. This cannot be allowed to happen again.
“At a time when homelessness is increasing, it’s hugely important that vulnerable Kiwis have access to a warm, dry home fit for people to live with dignity,” Jenny Salesa said. -Jenny Selesa, is Labour Party MP from Panmure-Ōtāhuhu and is spokesperson for Ethnic Communities, Associate Pacific Peoples
