The sudden and tragic death of a young and promising Indian student, Shaurya Sriram, has deeply shaken the Indian community in New Zealand.
Shaurya, 21, died after being pulled unconscious from Lake TaupÅ during a trip with friends over the Easter break, according to a close family friend. Emergency services were called to Whakamoenga Point in Acacia Bay at around 3:20pm on Sunday, April 5, after he was retrieved from the water.
Police confirmed that despite their best efforts, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene. The matter has been referred to the coroner.
Originally from Mumbai, Shaurya had travelled to TaupÅ with friends for a holiday. Those close to the family say he got into difficulty while in the water and was unable to recover. His family is devastated and is now seeking support to help expedite the process of returning his body to India.
Shaurya was an engineering student at the University of Auckland, remembered by friends as kind, bright, and full of potential. In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, few of his friends and their families gathered at Bharatiya Mandir to offer prayers and support one another.
The Indian community has also come together to raise funds to help cover the costs of repatriating Shauryaâs body to India for his final rites. A fundraising effort has been initiated, and those wishing to support the grieving family can contribute to the following account:
