A pipe has been cut in an apparent sabotage attempt that sent cooling oil leaking into an Auckland stream.

Fire and Emergency NZ (Fenz) and police were called to Great South Rd in Manurewa on Monday morning, following reports of fuel leaking from a line running under a bridge.

While initially believed to be a fuel pipe carrying diesel, it was later established to be a power cable carrying cooling oil, police and Auckland Council have confirmed.

Police are speaking to two people as part of their inquiries.

The emergency response was focused outside the U-GO petrol station. Z Energy, which owns the station, told Stuff the incident was not related to its operations but took place next to the site.

Fenz shift manager Paul Radden told Stuff they were alerted to the incident at 6.25am by a member of the public who smelled a “very strong fuel smell” while driving past.

Three crews arrived at 6.30am and found the line had been vandalised.
