Disha New Zealand Charitable Trust is committed to building strong, inclusive, and empowered South Asian communities across Aotearoa. The Trust supports seniors, migrants, and families by promoting wellbeing, social connection, and a sense of belonging through culturally appropriate programs and services.
To raise awareness on often unspoken issues, Disha partnered with Age Concern to deliver a presentation on 19th May focused on Family and Sexual Violence Prevention in South Asian Communities. The session was led by Jyoti Parashar, Elder Abuse Response Social Worker, and Shalini Gulani, Social Connections Coordinator, who shared cultural insight and professional expertise.
The presentation highlighted the impact of family violence on older adults and women, discussed widespread misconceptions, and explored the barriers to seeking help. It also highlighted the risk of isolation among migrant seniors, the importance of early intervention, respectful relationships, and the need for culturally safe support services. Around 100 attendees appreciated the safe and open environment for this vital discussion.
Disha continues to support older adults through engaging programs that foster independence, learning, inclusion, and volunteering. Activities include wellness workshops, exercise sessions, health information sessions cultural events, and intergenerational initiatives – all aimed at uplifting and connecting individuals.
Seniors have shown great enthusiasm in attending digital literacy sessions, confidence-building workshops, and cultural conversations that help them connected to both their heritage and the wider community.
On Sunday, 26th May, Disha proudly led the participation of over 70 seniors in the Whau Seniors Signature Event, held at the New Lynn Community Centre supported by Whau Local Board. Themed “Carnival Fun”, the free event was a vibrant and joyful celebration of community life. Seniors from diverse backgrounds came together, dressed in bright colours, to enjoy an afternoon filled with music, dance, quizzes, food, and interactive activities.
Seniors were excited to represent Disha, and their energy and enthusiasm lit up the venue. Many described the event as “uplifting” and “a true celebration of connection and joy”.
Disha remains deeply committed to fostering awareness, promoting physical and emotional wellbeing, enhancing social inclusion, and strengthening community resilience. Upcoming programs will continue to focus on expanding educational outreach, strengthening social connection, and supporting family and intergenerational wellbeing.
Disha New Zealand Charitable Trust invites individuals, families, and organisations to be part of this collective journey of change, compassion, and community-building.
Together, we can build a more respectful, resilient, and caring Aotearoa.
