Auckland commuters experienced a rough start to their Tuesday as major disruptions hit the city’s train network, leaving many frustrated and late to work.

An infrastructure issue at Penrose caused significant delays and cancellations, particularly affecting the Southern and Eastern lines. Commuters hoping to travel through Newmarket were out of luck—Southern line trains were not running through the station at all.

Auckland commuters on Tuesday morning are facing disruption to train services

Instead, all Southern line services were diverted to run via the Eastern line, forcing many passengers to rethink their usual routes. For those relying on the Onehunga line, the news was even worse—all services were suspended until further notice.

Passengers took to social media to express their concerns, with some describing packed platforms, unclear updates, and crowded alternative transport. For many, it was yet another frustrating reminder of the fragility of Auckland’s rail network.

Auckland Transport has advised commuters to check for live updates and consider alternative travel options where possible. Crews are working to resolve the issue, but no clear timeline has yet been provided for full service restoration.

If you’re heading out today, it’s a good idea to allow extra time for travel and stay tuned to AT’s real-time service updates. Tin Bureau
