After a bit of a breather from stormy weather, New Zealand is bracing for another bout of wild conditions this week. Both the North and South Islands are in for heavy rain, strong winds, snow in alpine areas, and disruptions to transport—especially around the Cook Strait.

What’s Happening?

Tairāwhiti (Gisborne) is under an orange heavy rain warning. Locals north of Tolaga Bay should be prepared for a soaking — up to 100mm of rain is expected by midday Wednesday. The rain could cause rivers to rise, with possible surface flooding and slips.

Nori Parata, deputy civil defence coordinator (and principal of Tolaga Bay Area School), said it’s been a relatively calm year for storms — a welcome break. But with heavy rain looming, she and her team are back in action checking on families in flood-prone homes, many of whom are still living in damaged properties due to financial constraints.

“These families have great safety plans,” Parata said. “But we still worry — especially about getting kids to school and home again safely if the weather turns.”

Wellington & Wairarapa: Wind & Waves Ahead

Further south, Wellington is facing strong coastal winds and massive ocean swells. Waves up to 7 metres are expected off the Wairarapa coast. Interislander and Bluebridge ferries have already cancelled several Cook Strait crossings between Wednesday night and Friday morning.

Extra sailings are planned over the weekend to help stranded passengers, but more cancellations may come if the weather doesn’t ease up.

South Island: Rain, Snow and Cold Air

The South Island is preparing for a serious soaking, especially around Banks Peninsula, Kaikōura, and Canterbury. Warnings are in place for heavy rain (up to 200mm in some areas), and snow is expected to fall down to 1000 metres on Thursday.

Roads through Arthur’s Pass and Porters Pass may be affected by snow, and strong winds are forecast for Marlborough, Westland, Buller, and the Nelson Lakes area.

In Christchurch, council crews have been busy clearing drains and preparing stormwater systems. Residents are being asked to help out by clearing leaves from gutters and drains near their homes.

“Some street flooding is normal in heavy rain,” the council reminded residents. “Our roads are designed to help manage excess water during these events.”

They’re also managing river levels in the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River to reduce the risk of flooding.

Auckland Alert

Up north, Aucklanders are being warned of a possible burst of wind and rain as the low-pressure system travels south. The Harbour Bridge could be affected overnight, so motorists should stay updated.

Bottom Line:

It’s another reminder to stay weather-aware. Check on neighbours, especially the elderly or vulnerable, and prepare your property for heavy rain or wind. Make sure your emergency kits are topped up, and keep an eye on local updates from MetService and your local council.
