On Saturday, 19 April 2025, Auckland’s Aotea Square was transformed into a vibrant hub of Himalayan culture as thousands gathered to celebrate Nepal Festival 2025. Organized by the New Zealand Nepal Society Incorporated, the highly anticipated event brought the heart of Nepal to the centre of Auckland’s CBD in a colourful and joyful celebration of music, food, dance, and community.
The free-entry festival, which kicked off at 12 PM, drew crowds from all walks of life, offering locals and visitors alike a chance to experience the rich cultural tapestry of Nepal. From traditional performances and handcrafted art to spicy street food and interactive workshops, Aotea Square buzzed with activity throughout the day.
Honouring a Timeless Connection

The festival also paid tribute to the longstanding friendship between New Zealand and Nepal, a relationship that dates back to the iconic 1953 summit of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. Their shared triumph not only symbolized courage and cooperation but laid the foundation for a connection between the two nations that continues to grow through cultural exchange and shared values.
In speeches delivered during the event, organizers and local dignitaries reflected on this enduring bond, emphasizing the contributions of the Nepali community in New Zealand and celebrating the spirit of multiculturalism that defines modern Aotearoa.
A Cultural Showcase
Festivalgoers were treated to a packed program of traditional and contemporary Nepali performances. The stage came alive with colourful folk dances, classical music, and rhythmic drumming, as artists from across the community showcased the country’s rich and diverse heritage. Each performance reflected the unique stories and traditions of Nepal’s many ethnic groups.
Food stalls proved to be a major highlight, offering authentic Nepali dishes such as momos (dumplings), sel roti, and spicy curries. The aroma of freshly prepared cuisine filled the square, and queues quickly formed as attendees eagerly sampled the flavours of Nepal.
In addition to the performances and food, the festival featured a bustling marketplace of handmade goods, including jewellery, textiles, and woodwork. Cultural exhibitions provided insight into Nepal’s geography, history, and spiritual traditions, drawing interest from both longtime admirers of Nepal and curious newcomers.
Families enjoyed a range of interactive activities and workshops, from henna painting and storytelling to dance lessons and art stations for children. The inclusive and festive atmosphere made it a memorable day for all ages.
A Resounding Success
Nepal Festival 2025 was widely hailed as a success, with attendees praising its energy, authenticity, and community spirit. For many, it was a chance to reconnect with their roots, while for others, it was an introduction to a culture they now feel closer to.

The event not only celebrated Nepal’s cultural richness but also reaffirmed the importance of diversity in New Zealand’s social fabric. As the sun set over Aotea Square, the music lingered in the air, and the sense of shared celebration left a lasting impression on all who attended.-TIN Bureau
