A man who tragically died following a crash involving a train and a vehicle in Auckland’s Penrose last Friday has been formally identified by police as Sarveen Singh, aged 40, of Auckland.

The accident occurred around 2pm on Friday at a level crossing near Station Road, a location frequented by both vehicles and pedestrians due to its proximity to key industrial and transport hubs in the area. Emergency services were called to the scene immediately after reports of a serious crash.

Sadly, Mr. Singh, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene des

pite efforts to provide emergency assistance. His vehicle had collided with a train on the tracks — the details of how the incident unfolded are still being pieced together by authorities.

Police have extended their deepest sympathies and condolences to Mr. Singh’s family and loved ones. “Our thoughts are with the family at this incredibly difficult time,” a police spokesperson said in a statement released this morning.

The crash has sparked renewed conversations around level crossing safety in urban areas like Penrose, where high vehicle and rail traffic intersect. Local residents have expressed concern in the past about visibility, signage, and the timing of barrier operations at some crossings.

A full investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision. This includes reviewing CCTV footage, train operation logs, and witness accounts.

Auckland Transport and KiwiRail have both confirmed they are cooperating with police to assist in the investigation and assess whether any additional safety measures are needed at the crossing.

In the meantime, police have urged the public to exercise caution around train crossings and to always adhere to crossing signals and barriers.

Mr. Singh’s death is a tragic reminder of how quickly accidents can occur and the importance of continued vigilance and investment in rail safety infrastructure.
