The Hindu Women Forum (HWF), a division of the Hindu Council of New Zealand, proudly completed its second successful Tongariro Alpine Crossing on 22 February 2025, reinforcing its commitment to women’s empowerment, well-being, and environmental stewardship.
The second event saw an enthusiastic group of 11 members from Auckland, Rotorua, and Wellington, along with their family members, embark on the 20.2 km journey through one of New Zealand’s most stunning and challenging alpine landscapes. Participants joined for various reasons—some sought adventure, some aimed to push their limits, and others wished to immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty of this iconic natural wonder. One participant shared that she was motivated by the opportunity to step out of her comfort zone and challenge herself both physically and mentally.
Tanishka Kaki, an 11-year-old from Rotorua, was the youngest member of the group.
While the event was primarily designed as a women’s empowerment initiative, family members joined to provide moral and physical support, transforming it into a meaningful community experience.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, renowned for its volcanic landscapes, emerald lakes, and rugged terrain, symbolizes strength, resilience, and personal growth—values that align deeply with the mission of HWF.
For the first time, a meditation session was conducted at the summit by Varsha Kaki from Rotorua, adding a spiritual dimension to the trek. HWF aims to incorporate yoga into future crossings to further enhance the experience.
“This year’s event was about encouraging more women to step out of their comfort zones, build confidence, and connect with nature,” said Kanan Acharya, a representative of the Hindu Women Forum.
“The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is not just a trek—it is a testament to inner strength, determination, and the power of collective support. We look forward to continuing this tradition and inspiring more women to take on challenges that foster personal and spiritual growth,” she added.
The event was made possible through the dedication of volunteers and organisers who share HWF’s vision of empowering women through transformative experiences. Safety was a top priority, with trained guides and comprehensive planning ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey for all participants.
Participant Experiences:
Shradha Patel (Wellington):
“My dream has come true. The experience was transformational—not just a physical challenge but also a spiritual journey that aligns with the Hindu philosophy of self-discovery and perseverance. The sense of inner fulfilment is beyond words; one must experience it to truly understand.”
Nagabrahmeswara KM (Wellington):
“The Tongariro Alpine Crossing was both a challenging and rewarding experience. Without proper preparation and a mindful approach, it would have been difficult. I met incredible people whose positivity and strong attitude boosted my confidence, making this journey even more special. I am extremely proud of this accomplishment and strongly encourage others to take up such activities. They help us focus on the present moment and deepen self-awareness.”
Varsha Kaki (Rotorua):
“The enthusiasm, resilience, and spirit of togetherness made this journey more than just a physical challenge—it was a deeply enriching experience for all. I was honoured to lead the meditation session at the summit. This initiative is also a wonderful way to bring women together, foster new friendships, and support one another in a collective journey of empowerment.”
