This afternoon, a man was found critically injured on Birkenhead Avenue in Auckland’s North Shore, following what police suspect was a stabbing incident.

A member of the public discovered the wounded man shortly after 2 p.m. Acting Detective Inspector Simon Harrison confirmed that an investigation is underway to piece together what happened.

“At this stage, we believe the man has sustained stab wounds. He was rushed to Auckland City Hospital and is currently in critical condition,” Harrison said.

A witness described the unsettling scene to 1News. “I saw a man lying on his back, clearly injured. An elderly lady stopped to help, and then a police car pulled up. It was scary—I’ve never seen anything like it. I really hope someone saw what happened.”

Authorities are now appealing for information from the public. “We’re keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed an incident either at an address or on the street,” Harrison urged. “If you saw a vehicle fleeing the scene, please get in touch as well.”

Birkenhead Avenue near Onewa Road has been closed for a police scene examination. Harrison assured the public that there would be a noticeable police presence in the area as investigations continue.

Auckland Transport confirmed the road closure around 2:50 p.m., advising people to avoid the area or expect delays, as diversions are in place affecting all traffic, including bus services.

Authorities appreciate the public’s cooperation and are determined to get to the bottom of this troubling incident.
