Aucklanders Brace for Wild Weather
It’s looking like a rough day ahead for those in Auckland and surrounding regions. With a slow-moving subtropical storm making its way across the North Island, here’s the latest on what to expect and how to stay safe.
When to Expect the Worst
The heavy rain is forecasted to hit Auckland hardest between 3 PM and 6 PM, just as rush hour kicks in. From there, the storm will move on to Coromandel and Gisborne, where heavy rain warnings are already in place.
What’s Happening Across the North Island
Northland: Over 1500 people have already lost power due to severe winds, with slips and flash flooding reported in multiple areas.
Auckland: Residents are being urged to secure outdoor furniture and prepare for potential harbour bridge lane closures due to high winds. Gusts of up to 93 km/h have been recorded near the bridge.
Coromandel: Lightning strikes have been reported, with localized heavy downpours expected. Nearly 700 homes in Whangamatā are without power as the storm moves in.
Gisborne: A heavy rain warning comes into effect at 4 PM, with up to 100mm of rain expected by tomorrow morning.
Stay Safe on the Roads: Watch out for slips, fallen trees, surface flooding, and debris. If you’re traveling, check the NZTA website for updates on road closures.
High-Sided Vehicles: If you’re driving a campervan, truck, or motorcycle, take extra caution on the Auckland Harbour Bridge or consider delaying travel.
Prepare for Power Outages: Make sure your devices are charged, and you have flashlights and emergency supplies ready.
Power Outages
Northland: Power has been cut to properties in Russell, Hokianga, and Awarua. Crews are working to restore services, but timelines remain uncertain.
Coromandel: Powerco reports nearly 700 properties in Whangamatā without electricity.
What’s Next?
MetService is keeping a close eye on conditions. While Northland is seeing some relief now, with lighter showers in the afternoon, Auckland, Coromandel, and Gisborne are next in line for the worst of the storm.
Stay safe out there, everyone! Keep an eye on the weather updates and take precautions. If you’re in a flood-prone area or planning to hit the road, take extra care and don’t take unnecessary risks.
