Marking a significant moment in the relationship between India and New Zealand. She was warmly welcomed at Auckland Airport by Trade Minister Todd McClay.

Day 1: Arrival in Auckland

President Murmu’s visit started in Auckland, where she will engage with the Indian community in Tāmaki Makaurau. This interaction is a highlight for many, showcasing the strong cultural ties between the two countries.

Day 2: Wellington – Bilateral Talks and Ceremonies

Tomorrow, the President will travel to Wellington. Here, she will hold important bilateral talks with Governor-General Cindy Kiro, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, and Foreign Minister Winston Peters. These discussions aim to strengthen political and economic relations between India and New Zealand.

In the morning, she will be officially welcomed at Government House. Following this, President Murmu will attend the New Zealand International Education Conference. This event is crucial, as it highlights the educational exchange and cooperation between the two nations.

One of the touching moments of her visit will be presenting a floral tribute at the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Wellington train station, paying homage to the iconic leader. Additionally, she will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Pukeahu National War Memorial, honoring those who have served.

Day 3: Engagements in Auckland and Departure

On Friday, President Murmu will return to Auckland. She will meet with members of the Indian community, providing a platform for cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Her visit will conclude with a departure to Timor-Leste.

Significance of the Visit

Prime Minister Luxon highlighted that this visit underscores New Zealand’s role as a trusted and supportive partner to India, both bilaterally and regionally. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs echoed this sentiment, stating that President Murmu’s visit would give further momentum to the already strong relations between the two countries.

This visit is historically significant as it is only the second by an Indian head of state to New Zealand. The first was by then-President Pranab Mukherjee in 2016. President Murmu is notable for being the second female and the first person from a tribal community to hold the position of President in India.

President Murmu’s state visit represents a deepening of ties between India and New Zealand, fostering cooperation, cultural exchange, and mutual respect.
