Light is a temporary happening, it is a burning up of something. Whether it is a lamp, or a bulb or the biggest source of light that we know as the Sun, all of them are burning up. If you put on an electric bulb, maybe it will last a few hundred hours. If you turn on the Sun, maybe it will burn up in billions of years, but it will burn up. When everything burns up, only darkness is there.

Human beings celebrate light simply because that is how our sense organs are oriented. Once the Sun sets and darkness comes, nocturnal insects, birds and animals are roaring through the night. If your eyes and your perception of the visual were made like these animals, you would not be thinking “Divine Light,” you would be thinking “Divine Darkness.” Your prejudice with light is simply because of the way your survival mechanism has been created.

Light is very limited. Whether it is an electric bulb light or sunlight –¬ the very source of life on this planet – I can stop the flow of light with just the face of my palm and leave a shadow of darkness behind. But with darkness, what can you do?

The whole existence is pure darkness. If you look up in the sky, the Sun dominates during the day, so you don’t see things the way they are. But if you look up in the night, generally you notice a lot of stars, but the stars are just small specks. The vast expanse of the sky is pure darkness. In the lap of a boundless expanse of darkness, just a little bit of light is happening here and there, but you identify yourself with that little happening and not the vastness of darkness because you are a little happening. You are a little existence so you identify with other forms of existence. But the non-existence of darkness is the largest part.

Always, in every religion, they have told you God is everywhere. If what you call as God has to make any sense, he or she or it – whatever you call it – has to be everywhere. The only thing in existence that is everywhere is pure darkness. That is why we said Shiva is the Dark One. Only he can be everywhere. The word “Shiva” literally means, “that which is not” or “emptiness.” “That which is,” is creation, and creation is a small happening. Non-creation is the biggest expanse. It is in the lap of nothingness that something-ness happens – it happens and it disappears. Whole galaxies just collapse into themselves and become nothing. That is why we say everything comes from Shiva and goes back to him. Even the other gods and goddesses, they all come from him, and go back to him. This is just quantum physics expressed in a beautiful story because everything comes from nothingness and goes back to nothingness. That is the reality of existence.
