Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient traditions to the mankind. It embodies unity of mind, body, and soul, thought and action, restraint and fulfilment, harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. It’s not just about physical exercise but to discover the sense on oneness with yourself, the world, and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in wellbeing. Let’s work towards adopting an International Yoga Day, Narendra Modi appealed at the United Nations. His appeal was overwhelming accepted at the UN and world has been celebrating 21st June, every year as the International Yoga Day, since.

Lord Shiva is considered to be creator/originator of Yoga; hence he is also called Adi yogi (adi=first). Yoga was brought to the people by the Saptarishis (seven sages) who learnt it from Lord Shiva. So, practicing of Yoga in India goes back thousands of years. After Prime Minister Modi’s appeal, a resolution was presented at the United Nations by India that was co-sponsored by a record number of 177 nations of the world. Till date, this remains the highest number ever of support to a resolution of this nature by any nation at United Nations General Assembly.

This year also, International Yoga Day was celebrated at some place on Sunday 19th June (being a holiday) and on the Yoga Day on 21st June (mainly in India) while at other places it will be held on the Sunday 26th June,2022. In New Zealand also, the Indian High Commission led the Yoga Day celebrations at different cities including at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Hamilton. While at Wellington, Indian High Commissioner H.E. Muktesh Pardeshi led the Yoga session at the new Chancery premises along with over a hundred Yoga enthusiasts, in Auckland India’s Hon Consul Bhav Dhillon took the lead along his wife and a couple of hundred other participants. The International Yoga Day celebration was scheduled to be at two places in Auckland and people took part at both the venues wholeheartedly. On the day of International Yoga Day on 21st June, the celebration took place at New Zealand parliament at Wellington and in Auckland at the iconic Sky Towers
