Non-Resident Nepal Association New Zealand (NRNA NZ), the New Zealand chapter of Non-Resident Nepal Association (NRNA) worldwide network, organised a ‘meet the press’ on 15th May at Himalayan Fusion restaurant in New Lynn, Auckland to spell out about the upcoming Everest Day-2022 celebration across New Zealand and in New Zealand Parliament.

NRNA has its presence in around 85 countries worldwide with its global headquarters in Nepal. NRNA is a national-level New Zealand organisation with membership extending throughout the country in both the islands. The broad aim of NRNANZ is to facilitate the integration of culture, societal values and traditions between Nepal and New Zealand. This year marks the 69th year of remarkable ascent of Mount Everest on 29th May 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal. So, this is an opportunity to recognise the friendship between New Zealand and Nepal forged at the top of the world 69 years ago and explore the areas on common interest in the mountaineering and tourism sector. Every year NRNA, New Zealand celebrates this event as one the annual calendar’s key events and for the first time it will be celebrated at six different places in Auckland, Hamilton, Bay of Plenty, Christchurch, Wellington and in Invercargill from 28th May to 31st May 2022. The official programme of the Everest Day will be held in the New Zealand Parliament on 29th May in presence of New Zealand’s Prime Minister and other political leaders. Peter Hillary, son of legendry Sir Edmund Hillary along with the members of Indian and Nepalese community will be part of the commemoration celebrations at the Parliament.

NRNA NZ and the Himalayan Trust have already started working on the plans about the 70th year commemoration of the ascent on top of the world. Peter Hillary, who himself is an avid mountaineer and has scaled most of the top summits in the world including Mt Everest said he will be attending Everest Day celebrations in India, Nepal, London, and in New York after the New Zealand event. -TIN Bureau
