Journey of Karpal Singh
“Everyone has a unique journey. When my life had given me a chance to restart, I made the move from being a banker to a film-maker. I am grateful that I could continue to work in the industry after completing my film studies back in 2017. Many will say that it will be a bad decision, but what I have learned is that one must take the chance and follow his heart,” candidly mentioned Karpal Singh.
Karpal, during his days as a banker, always wanted to do something about his love and passion for film and television. After the redundancy from a decade long banking career, when he got the opportunity, he jumped onto it. Like any other industry he had to start from the scratch, with every project his vision and love for the art expanded.
One canvas, different worlds
When The Indian News interviewed Karpal sometime back, he told us that he is very excited about his project, ‘Impossible’ which is one of the most ambitious projects that he has worked on. Now it is complete and on the way to various film festivals around the world. With the support of the New Zealand Film Commission, this cross-cultural short-film in a musical format was the brainchild of Gabriel Reid. Belindalee Hope and Karpal Singh are the producers of the short film.
In February 2020, Fusion Films set out on an ambitious mission, to make ‘Impossible’ a musical short film bringing a dazzling mesh of Kiwi and Indian cultures to the big screen. It’s a love story, a family drama, as well as a musical with large-scale dance numbers and plenty of glamour that is epically entertaining.
Belindalee Hope says, “The technical completion of the short film is only the start of the film’s journey, as the team has started working on the feature film version of ‘Impossible’. The dreams are big for ‘Impossible’.”
Looking forward
“I am immensely proud to be a part of this beautiful film project, sharing a unique story of today’s Aotearoa. It’s ambitious, diverse, and highlights Kiwis from different backgrounds, cultures, religions, and ages. It’s been an incredible journey for the ‘Impossible’ team! From working on the script to conducting many auditions, and from doing several acting/dancing rehearsals to filming the story earlier this year. This project is a dream come true for us,” says a proud Karpal.
Karpal also mentioned that this was a great opportunity for him to work with a crew that has had global exposure and with the likes of Belindalee and director, Gabriel. He said, “This was a great way to showcase the Indian diaspora and the talent that resides in this beautiful country of ours. This will also give a chance to make New Zealand a hub for making films by artists and creative people, outside of big markets like Bollywood.”
There is a special screening of ‘Impossible’ for cast, crew, and sponsors on November 1, 2020. Let us all wish the best for the team and that they shine bright, because nothing is impossible. – by Shivangi Bose, an Auckland-based writer with special interest in script-writing for brand videos.
