From 5 October, people coming to New Zealand will need to have booked their stay in managed isolation before they get on their flight. Under the new Managed Isolation Allocation System, once an individual traveller, couple or family group has completed their registration online, they will be issued a voucher that confirms their allocation to a place in managed isolation. They will need to present their voucher at the airport in order to board their flight.

Vouchers can be obtained from the Managed Isolation Allocation System online portal from 8am, 5 October. The link to the Managed Isolation Allocation System online portal from that time will be at https://www.miq.govt.nz/travel-to-new-zealand/secure-your-place-in-managed-isolation/.

Once the individual traveller, couple or family group has completed their registration on the system, they will be issued a voucher that confirms their allocation to a place in managed isolation. They will need to present their voucher at the airport in order to board their flight. Family registrations The ‘family registration’ option is for family groups, couples and other groups of people travelling on the same flight to New Zealand who wish to share rooms for the duration of their stay in managed isolation.

If you are completing a ‘family registration’, you only need to create one account on the Managed Isolation Allocation System for everyone in the group. There will be one Managed Isolation Allocation Voucher issued per ‘family registration’. The voucher will list the names of the people in the group who have been allocated a place in managed isolation.

There will be some situations where people will need to urgently return to New Zealand. A process will soon be in place to manage these situations. More information will be available on this website at a later date.

Legal requirement to get a voucher

Getting a voucher is an extra step for all people flying to New Zealand. To help with the transition, there will be a grace period before having a voucher will become a legal requirement.

Travellers arriving before 3 November

If you arrive in New Zealand within the grace period from 8am, 5 October 2020 to 11.59pm, 2 November 2020 you are strongly encouraged to get a voucher confirming you have been allocated a place in a managed isolation facility before you board your flight.

Travellers who arrive at the airport without a voucher during the grace period will still be able to board their flight. However their check-in process may take longer while airline staff work with MIQ to arrange a place for them in managed isolation.

Travellers arriving after 3 November

Travellers are legally required to have a voucher before flying if they are arriving in New Zealand after 12am, 3 November 2020.

If you arrive in New Zealand after 12am 3 November, airlines will not be permitted to board you if you do not have a voucher, unless you are exempt from using the Managed Isolation Allocation System.

There is no fee for getting a voucher. However, some people will be charged for their stay in managed isolation or quarantine.

People using the Managed Isolation Allocation System will be able to note dietary requirements, accessibility considerations, select double or twin rooms, and list any other needs or requests. By having this information in advance, the managed isolation facilities will be better able to support the different needs of people during their stay.

Charges for managed isolation

$3,100 for the first or only person in the room (whether that is an adult or a child) with $950 for each additional adult and $475 for each additional child (3-17 years old, inclusive) sharing that room, all GST inclusive. There will be no charge for children under the age of 3 if they are staying in a room with another person. If you are liable to pay, you will be charged per room.

Who will have to pay

If you are a NZ citizen or resident you will be liable for a charge if:

• You are currently overseas and return to NZ for a period of less than 90 days; or

• You leave NZ after the regulations came into effect (12.01am on 11 August 2020) and return at a later date.
