South-east Asian communities form an action group to collectively take up immigration issues
In a first-of-its-kind meeting held in Auckland on November 11, representatives from several Kiwi-South-east Asian communities including from India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka – decided to form a five-member action committee to take up collective immigration concerns with the Central Government.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Sunny Kaushal, spokesperson of the newly-formed committee informed, “It was the first time that communities across the board, came on a common platform, to discuss issues of common interests. We discussed the recent changes in partnership visa and parents visa category, as well as the negative comments made by senior minister Shane Jones against some migrant communities. After some robust discussion, this action committee has been formed, which will deal with the Government and put forward the communities concerns and suggestions.”
High on agenda will be asking the Government to lower the thresholds for parents category visa to New Zealand median incomes, expecting the PM to take a lead and rein in her ministers [and their anti-migrant rhetoric], and making reading of cultural reports mandatory for government agencies before they take any policy decisions affecting the multicultural communities, Kaushal added.
