Heavy rain has caused a major river to burst its banks in Canterbury, forcing road closures and disrupting travel across the region.

Authorities say persistent downpours over the past 24 hours have led to rapidly rising river levels, with floodwaters spilling into surrounding farmland and low-lying areas. Emergency services were called after sections of key highways became submerged, making driving conditions dangerous and, in some cases, impossible.Stokes Valley painter Aaron Pahl says he shouted to his children to get to safety when a large slip fell away from the base of his home - leaving the house uninhabitable -on Monday morning.

The worst-affected areas are in rural parts of Canterbury, where swollen waterways have cut off access to some properties. Local residents reported seeing water levels rise quickly overnight, with paddocks turning into temporary lakes and drainage systems struggling to cope with the volume of rain.

State Highway closures have been put in place as a precaution, with officials urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel. Drivers are being advised to check for the latest updates before heading out, as conditions remain changeable and further closures are possible if rainfall continues.

Emergency management teams are closely monitoring river levels and weather forecasts. Sandbags have been distributed in vulnerable communities, and crews are working to clear debris from culverts and stormwater drains to help reduce the impact of flooding. So far, there have been no reports of serious injuries, but authorities warn that fast-moving floodwaters pose a significant risk.

Local councils are reminding residents to stay informed through official channels and to follow any evacuation advice if issued. Farmers in particular are being encouraged to move livestock to higher ground where possible.

Meteorologists say more rain is expected in the coming hours, which could prolong flooding and delay the reopening of affected highways. Officials stress that even once the rain eases, rivers may remain high for some time.Stokes Valley painter Aaron Pahl says he shouted to his children to get to safety when a large slip fell away from the base of his home - leaving the house uninhabitable - on Monday morning.

For now, the focus remains on public safety, protecting property, and restoring access to critical transport routes as soon as conditions allow.
