Bharatiya Mandir marked the sacred occasion of Ratha Saptami with the annual Surya Namaskar programme on 25 January, held at the Bharatiya Mandir Community Hall. The event brought together devotees, yoga practitioners, and community members in a shared celebration of spirituality, wellness, and cultural heritage.
Ratha Saptami holds deep significance in Hindu tradition, symbolising the transition of the Sun God, Surya, towards the northern hemisphere and marking the onset of positive energy, renewal, and vitality. The programme began with traditional prayers and ceremonial lamp lighting, setting a reverent and uplifting tone for the morning. This was followed by an address that explained the spiritual, cultural, and health-related importance of Ratha Saptami, highlighting Surya Namaskar as both a sacred ritual and a holistic practice for physical and mental wellbeing.
To ensure inclusivity, a guided demonstration of Surya Namaskar was conducted for first-time participants and newcomers to yoga. This allowed everyone, regardless of experience level, to take part with confidence and understanding. Following the demonstration, members of the Bharatiya Mandir Yoga Group collectively performed 108 Surya Namaskars, creating a powerful and energising atmosphere filled with devotion, discipline, and collective spirit.
The event reflected Bharatiya Mandir’s ongoing commitment to promoting health, mindfulness, and cultural continuity within the wider community. Beyond religious observances, the Mandir regularly organises youth and adult yoga sessions, cultural celebrations, festivals, and community gatherings, providing a welcoming space where people of all backgrounds can connect, learn, and grow together.
The organisers expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants and supporters whose enthusiastic involvement contributed to the success of the programme. Special appreciation was extended to yoga instructor Binuja Menon for her guidance and leadership, as well as dedicated volunteers Kanhaiya Sharma, Manisha Sharma, and Suvarna Shawrikar, whose efforts ensured the smooth coordination and execution of the event.
Bharatiya Mandir continues to play a vital role as a cultural and community hub, fostering intergenerational engagement and encouraging healthy lifestyles rooted in ancient wisdom. Events such as the Surya Namaskar programme not only preserve traditional practices but also strengthen community bonds and promote overall wellbeing.
