Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has arrived in Waitangi for a meeting with the Iwi Chairs Forum.

Shortly after 10am, Luxon was driven to Waitangi’s Copthorne Hotel.

He was greeted by Ngāti Wai iwi chairman Aperahama Edwards, who was the person who took David Seymour’s microphone during last year’s Waitangi pōwhiri for politicians.

Luxon and other ministers rengaged recently with Edwards in light of the damage caused by recent storms and heavy rain, much of which impacted Edward’s rohe (area).

A massive pōwhiri for the Māori queen, Te Arikinui Ngā wai hono i te po, and her Kiingitanga delegation is underway.

There are more than 100 kapa haka performers.

Her delegation includes high profile Māori leaders Rahui Papa, Tuku Morgan and Bayden Barber.

As expected, this is the biggest pōwhiri of the Waitangi events so far with crowds of spectators gathering.
