DISHA New Zealand Charitable Trust continues to support the wellbeing, confidence, and active participation of older adults through its regular Positive Ageing Day Programs, held across Balmoral, New Lynn, and the North Shore. These programs provide welcoming and supportive spaces where seniors come together for social connection, learning, gentle physical activity, and meaningful community engagement.

Beyond regular day programs, DISHA seniors are encouraged to take part in wider community initiatives that promote safety, inclusion, and civic responsibility. One such initiative was the Community Safety Ambassadors Patrol, organised by Age Concern Auckland on 27 January, in which DISHA seniors proudly participated.
On the day, seniors gathered at the Age Concern Avondale office, where they were warmly welcomed and offered refreshments. This time allowed for connection, briefing, and preparation before the group proceeded together to the Avondale Police Station. There, they were welcomed by the Area Commander for Central Auckland, Inspector Jacqui Whittaker.

Inspector Whittaker personally thanked the seniors for their commitment and acknowledged their valuable contribution to keeping local communities safe. She expressed appreciation for their willingness to volunteer their time and serve as visible, positive role models within the community. Her words reinforced the importance of senior involvement in community safety initiatives.
The primary purpose of the Community Safety Ambassador Patrol is to increase visibility in the area, helping to foster reassurance, trust, and connection within the local community. During the patrol, ambassadors walked through the Avondale township, engaging with shopkeepers, shoppers, and members of the public. These friendly interactions promote communication, strengthen relationships, and contribute to a safer, more connected neighbourhood.

For participating seniors, the patrol was not only an opportunity to give back to the community but also a meaningful experience that enhanced confidence, purpose, and social engagement. Initiatives like this highlight the vital role older adults play in strengthening community safety and social cohesion.
DISHA NZ remains committed to empowering seniors through opportunities that support physical, mental, and social wellbeing, while encouraging active citizenship and leadership. Participation in community safety initiatives aligns strongly with DISHA’s mission to promote positive ageing and ensure seniors remain visible, valued, and respected members of society.
