A landslip has struck a popular campsite at the base of Mauao (Mount Maunganui), triggering a major emergency response.
An eyewitness at the scene said he heard people screaming and fears that some campers may be trapped. The slip is believed to have come down near tents and campervans parked in the area.
Emergency services rushed to the scene. A Mount Maunganui resident reported seeing at least eight police vehicles and three fire trucks, with sirens blaring, heading north toward Mauao.
Authorities are urging the public to stay away from the area while emergency crews assess the situation and ensure everyone’s safety.
More updates to come as information is confirmed.
