Welcoming the New Year with Hope, Connection, and Purpose

As we step into a new year, DISHA New Zealand Charitable Trust extends heartfelt wishes to all readers, members, seniors, volunteers, partners, and supporters for a very Happy New Year. May the year ahead bring good health, happiness, peace, and renewed hope for you and your loved ones.
The beginning of a new year offers a valuable moment to reflect on the journeys shared and the connections built together. DISHA NZ has continued to support seniors, migrant families, and ethnic communities through programs that promote positive ageing, wellbeing, social connection, and cultural belonging over the past few years. This collective journey would not be possible without the trust, participation, and encouragement of the wider community.
The year began on a festive and meaningful note with our first program of the year, held on Wednesday, 14 January, a time when many Indian communities celebrate Sankranti and welcome new beginnings. The occasion was thoughtfully marked by bringing together Lohri, Sankranti, and Hindi Diwas, creating a vibrant space for culture, language, and connection.

The celebration offered members a wonderful opportunity to share traditions, memories, and talents, making the program both engaging and heartwarming. Seniors and community members actively participated by speaking about the significance of these festivals, reflecting on seasonal change, gratitude, and renewal.

Members shared poems, short talks, folk songs, and personal stories in Hindi, celebrating the richness of the language and its deep emotional connection to identity and heritage. The Hindi Diwas segment was particularly meaningful, as participants expressed how language keeps memories alive, strengthens bonds, and provides comfort for many migrants living far from their homeland.
Lohri and Sankranti were celebrated with joy and enthusiasm, with members explaining regional customs, traditional foods, and harvest rituals from across India. This sharing created a beautiful learning space, allowing participants from different regions and backgrounds to appreciate each other’s traditions and experiences.

The atmosphere throughout the day was filled with warmth, laughter, and mutual respect. The program reinforced DISHA’s commitment to supporting emotional wellbeing, social connection, and cultural belonging. Events like these help reduce isolation, encourage self-expression, and foster a sense of purpose and pride among older adults.
As always, the gathering reflected the spirit of togetherness that defines DISHA’s Positive Ageing Day Programs, which continue to run across Balmoral, New Lynn, and the North Shore, nurturing physical, mental, and social wellbeing in safe and welcoming spaces.
The celebration of Lohri, Sankranti, and Hindi Diwas served as a beautiful reminder that cultural traditions and shared stories have the power to unite communities, strengthen identity, and begin the year with positivity and hope.
