A bizarre and dangerous incident has unfolded in Auckland after a man posing as a police officer attempted to pull over an actual police car — while allegedly more than twice the legal alcohol limit.
Police say the 38-year-old was driving a station wagon fitted with red and blue flashing lights when he signalled an unmarked patrol car to stop. The officers quickly realised something was wrong. When the driver discovered he was dealing with real police, he reportedly tried to flee the scene.
He didn’t get far.
Officers stopped the vehicle and arrested the man without incident. A breath test later revealed he was allegedly more than double the legal alcohol limit, compounding what police described as a “serious and reckless” situation.
The man has been charged with impersonating a police officer and excess breath alcohol. He is due to appear in Manukau District Court this week.
Police have issued a strong warning that impersonating officers is not only illegal, but extremely dangerous, particularly when alcohol is involved. Authorities say the incident highlights the risks posed by fake emergency lights and irresponsible behaviour on public roads.
