The vibrant spirit of Punjabi culture was on full display as New Zealand successfully hosted the 3rd Kabaddi World Cup on Sunday, 7 December. The highly anticipated event brought together six international teams from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States, India, and Pakistan, transforming the day into a powerful celebration of sporting excellence, cultural pride, and community unity across Aotearoa.
Held at the expansive sports grounds of Takanini Gurdwara, the tournament offered an electrifying showcase of skill, strength, and traditional athleticism. Kabaddi—deeply embedded in Indian heritage—has grown significantly in global recognition, and this year’s World Cup once again highlighted its cultural and sporting importance. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as attendees enjoyed not only the matches but also cultural performances and traditional displays that truly reflected the richness of Punjabi culture.
The event lived up to expectations, drawing an impressive crowd of 6,000 to 7,000 spectators from across New Zealand. Families, youth, sports enthusiasts, and community leaders filled the venue throughout the hot afternoon, remaining engaged and enthusiastic from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Their cheers and support created an unforgettable energy around the arena.
Proudly supported by the Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand, the NZ Central Sikh Association, and numerous community partners, the World Cup event showcased the collective effort of organisations dedicated to preserving cultural heritage and fostering unity. The smooth execution of the event was ensured by coordinators Daljit Singh, Lali Ranvir Singh, JP, and Karmjit Singh, JP, who worked tirelessly throughout the day.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon attended the closing moments of the tournament, accompanied by local Member of Parliament Rima Nakhle. Other important leaders to join the bandwagon were Dy. Prime Minister David Seymour, MPs Parmjeet Parmar, Genny Selesa and Carmel Sepuloni. Their presence underscored the importance of cultural events in strengthening national unity and celebrating New Zealand’s diverse communities. Several other respected community leaders were also in attendance, further enriching the spirit of the celebration.


The highlight of the day came during the thrilling final match, where the New Zealand team delivered an outstanding performance to win the championship title of the 3rd Kabaddi World Cup 2025. Their victory was met with roaring applause and immense pride from the crowd, marking a memorable achievement in the country’s sporting landscape.
Presidents Kartar Singh and Kamaljit Singh Ranewal of the Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to the event’s success. Hosted at the NZ Sikh Sports Complex in Takanini, the World Cup stood as a testament to the power of cultural celebration and community collaboration, providing a meaningful space where people from all walks of life could come together.
