DISHA New Zealand Charitable Trust continues to nurture a sense of belonging, wellbeing, and lifelong learning among seniors and newcomers through its day programs and community initiatives. Two recent highlights – a special talk by Dr. Yogesh Kumar and the ongoing “Home Away from Home” program — beautifully captured DISHA’s mission of care, connection, and empowerment.

The Trust was honoured to host Dr. Yogesh Kumar, Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal & General Surgeon from West Midlands, England, during his recent visit to Auckland. Dr. Kumar’s interactive talk at the Balmoral Centre provided valuable insights into healthy living, preventive healthcare, and common gastrointestinal issues faced by older adults.

He spoke passionately about the importance of balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and early medical consultation to maintain long-term wellbeing. Participants found the session deeply engaging and appreciated Dr. Kumar’s practical advice on adopting simple lifestyle changes for better digestive and overall health. His approachable nature and ability to explain complex medical topics in easy-to-understand terms made the session both educational and enjoyable. The talk concluded with a lively Q&A, where seniors shared personal experiences and gained clarity on health concerns relevant to their age group.
Alongside such informative sessions, DISHA’s “Home Away from Home” initiative continues to offer a warm and welcoming space for seniors and newcomers seeking friendship, support, and a sense of belonging. Moving to a new country can be both exciting and overwhelming — and DISHA’s day programs are designed to make that transition easier through community connection and shared experiences.

The programs include health and wellbeing sessions, interfaith gatherings, support and advocacy, and intergenerational activities, all aimed at promoting holistic wellbeing. From gentle exercises and mindfulness workshops to social lunches and cultural celebrations, participants enjoy a vibrant mix of activities that uplift both mind and spirit.
Many newcomers describe DISHA as their “second family” — a place where they can laugh, learn, and feel supported while maintaining their cultural roots.
DISHA’s day programs are held regularly at Balmoral, New Lynn, and North Shore, each fostering a diverse, inclusive environment where seniors can thrive and build lasting friendships.

Through initiatives like these, DISHA continues to live its mission — empowering seniors, connecting communities, and ensuring that no one ever feels alone.
