The Bihar Jharkhand Association of New Zealand (BJANZ) hosted a vibrant Diwali Milan Samaroh 2025 at the Mount Eden War Memorial Hall, uniting Members of Parliament, community leaders, and families from across the country in a joyous evening of light, culture, and togetherness.
The event drew a full house and featured an impressive lineup of cultural performances, traditional attire, and heartfelt expressions of Diwali’s enduring message — the triumph of light over darkness and unity over division.

Leading the distinguished guest list was Hon. Mark Mitchell, Minister for Ethnic Communities, who expressed his gratitude for the support and warmth shown by the Indian community during his recent illness. “I have never seen the New Zealand–India relationship in such a strong place,” Minister Mitchell remarked, referencing the Prime Minister’s recent visit to India. “Events like this, where our Kiwi kids proudly connect with their roots, help strengthen the fabric of our diverse and inclusive nation.”
Dr. Paramjeet Parmar, MP, congratulated BJANZ President Amit Shankar Verma and his team for their leadership and organisation, highlighting that Diwali’s light and positivity should inspire people throughout the year. She also conveyed warm wishes from Deputy Prime Minister Hon. David Seymour to the Indian community.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Hon. Melissa Lee, MP; Ms. Nancy Lu, MP; Ms. Rima Nakhle, MP; Dr. Carlos Cheung, MP; Hon. Michael Wood, MP; and former MP Mr. Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi — all of whom commended BJANZ for hosting an inclusive and energetic community celebration that embodied New Zealand’s multicultural spirit.
BJANZ President Amit Shankar Verma thanked the guests and attendees for their overwhelming participation, saying, “This year’s Diwali Milan Samaroh has truly surpassed expectations. Seeing leaders and families from all walks of life come together in joy and unity reminds us of the shared values that light our path forward.”
Mr. Veer Khar, President of the New Zealand Indian Central Association (NZICA), also lauded BJANZ for its community work. “BJANZ continues to play a vital role in preserving Indian culture while fostering inclusion and harmony,” he said. “Their celebrations are a testament to the diversity that enriches New Zealand society.”
A highlight of the evening came when MPs, community leaders, and BJANZ members joined in a spontaneous group dance, filling the hall with laughter, rhythm, and the true spirit of Diwali togetherness.
The cultural programme featured a lively mix of traditional and contemporary performances — including folk dances from Bihar and Jharkhand, devotional presentations of Chhath Mahaparv, Bollywood fusion acts, and a live music performance by the Benaam Group.
BJANZ extended heartfelt appreciation to its executive committee — Amit Shankar Verma, Reetu Verma, Rani Singh, Shalini Alok, Preeti Maheshwari, Kiran Singh, Nishant Lal, Indu Ajitesh, and Indu Rajashekharan — for their dedication and tireless efforts in making the event a grand success. The Association also expressed gratitude to its sponsors, including Port of Auckland, National Finance, Bank of India (NZ) Ltd, Travelshop, Key 2 Rental, Malabar Gold and Diamonds, Paras Chaudhary – Real Estate Agent, V-Revive, and Unique Beauty & Hair, and to event partners such as Radio Sadeaala, Paradise, Taste of Bihar NZ, and Shivani Restaurants & Bakery for their valuable support.-TIN Bureau
