A Journey of Community, Culture and Connection
Fifteen years ago, a few families from Bihar and Jharkhand in New Zealand came together with one simple dream. They wanted to build a home away from home where people could celebrate their roots while embracing their new life in Australasia.
That dream gave birth to Bihar Jharkhand Sabha Australia and New Zealand (BJSM). Today it stands as one of the most vibrant and respected Indian community organisations across the Tasman.
Vision Statement: Connecting People Abroad
Mission Statement:
Aim to preserve, uphold, foster and promote the lingo-socio-cultural heritage, to facilitate better communication and networking
•to promote friendship and respect among members, to facilitate smooth settlement and assimilation of new immigrants.BJSM continues to grow through four key focus areas that keep the community connected and inspired:
Culture – Showcasing festivals like Chhath, Holi and Diwali, and celebrating music, dance and art that remind us of our roots.Social – Building togetherness through charity drives, youth involvement and social gatherings that strengthen friendships.
Nature – Promoting a greener planet through tree plantations, beach clean-ups and eco-friendly practices.
Health and Wellness – Supporting wellbeing through blood donation drives, health workshops and awareness programs.
The earliest seeds of BJSM were sown around 2007 and 2008 when Vinita Ji, Aarti Ji and Verma Ji’s families began meeting regularly at one another’s homes. Those small family gatherings built the friendship and belonging that shaped the foundation of BJSM.
Formal Members Registration and Meeting
The formal registration of members began on 26 September 2010.
In 2017, BJSM held its first official meeting at Sangam Restaurant, bringing together many community members to plan the Sabha’s future.
By September 2018, the organisation was officially incorporated as Bihar Jharkhand Sabha of Australia & New Zealand (Inc), marking a new chapter of structure and growth.
A Journey Built on People and Purpose
What began as friendly meet-ups soon became a strong and united family. Over the years, BJSM has organised beautiful celebrations of Diwali, Chhath, Holi and Independence Day. Each event brings families together, helps children connect with their heritage and strengthens cultural pride. Behind every celebration stands the same belief that built BJSM in the first place: unity, respect and togetherness.
Every executive team has carried forward the same goal of unity and service. From registering BJSM as an official body to securing grants and hosting large cultural events, each chapter has helped the organisation grow stronger.
BJSM now proudly connects families in both Australia and New Zealand, creating opportunities for children and youth to lead and learn.
Celebrating 15 Years of Togetherness
From its humble beginnings to a recognised cultural institution, BJSM’s journey reflects the heart of its people – warm, resilient and united.
As we celebrate fifteen remarkable years, we thank every volunteer, supporter and well-wisher who helped make BJSM a symbol of pride for the Bihar and Jharkhand community.
Current Executive Team members:
Bhrigu Bhaskar (President) , Krishna Singh (Vice President), Ravi Gupta (General secretary), Sujata Kumar (Treasurer), Rajesh Kumar (Cultural secretary)
