Reversals of blanket speed limit reductions will commence Wednesday night, starting with State Highway 2 in the Wairarapa, and are expected to conclude by July 1. This follows the National and ACT coalition’s promise to reverse speed limit cuts made under the previous Labour government.
NZTA will restore higher speed limits on 38 state highway sections over the next five months. These changes will impact regions including Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu-Whanganui, Greater Wellington, Canterbury, and parts of the South Island.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Transport Minister Chris Bishop announced the initiative in Featherston on Wednesday. Bishop stated NZTA would incorporate speed limit reversals with planned maintenance to streamline the process.
An additional 49 highway sections will undergo public consultation to decide whether to retain reduced speed limits or return to higher limits. This six-week consultation begins Thursday, with councils having until May 1 to advise on local road changes.

From July 2026, all roads outside schools will require variable speed limits—30km/h in urban areas and 60km/h or less in rural areas. Bishop emphasized road safety measures, including stricter drug and alcohol testing, as part of the government’s broader transport safety strategy. -TIN Bureau
