AAP – 62 | BJP – 8 | Cong – 0
Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) retained power in Delhi on Tuesday by winning 62 of 70 seats, leaving the state’s opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with just eight seats. AAP held on to the nearly 54% votes it had got in the 2015 Delhi Assembly polls, while the BJP got 38.51%. Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 years before being voted out in 2013, drew a blank. The elections were held on Saturday, with voter turnout being 62.59%, according to India’s Election Commission.
“This is a win for Mother India,” Kejriwal told his supporters at a roadshow after his massive win. All prominent AAP leaders – Manish Sisodia, Raghav Chadha, Atishi, and Gopal Rai, retained their respective seats. With this loss, BJP has scored a ha-trick of loses, after losing Jharkhand and Maharastra last year. Meanwhile, Kejriwal is likely to take oath on February 16. -TIN Bureau
