In an initiative that started last year and has grown since, Hare Krishna Auckland (Iskcon), is now distrusting free lunches in four Auckland schools, once every month. This is part of the organization’s very popular programme Food for Life.
“On Monday, we distributed free lunches at Mt Richmond Special School in Otahuhu. And this Friday, we will be doing the same at the East Tamaki School,” informed Krishna, from Iskcon.
On how it all started, he informed, “Under our Food for Life programme, free food distribution takes place every fortnight on Queen Street, Auckland, since 2018, On the same platform, monthly community dinner in Massey is running successfully, since past few years.”
“On site [Hare Krishna premises in Kumeu], the temple holds ‘Sunday Love feast’ for all, accommodating more than a hundred every Sunday. And this initiative, Lunch to Schools, is once a month, which started last year.”
“Currently we are doing four schools, going to a school every week. Overall, we cover, 420 students of Ferguson Intermediate School, about 150 at Mt Richmond Special School, 240 at the East Tamaki School, and 400 students of the Waitakere College, which we started tthis year. We are looking to add more schools as we go along,” he added.

Food for Life – No One Should Go Hungry
Food for Life as a project was initially inspired by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder-Acharya of Iskcon. In 1974, when watching a group of village children fighting with dogs over scraps of food, the He became upset and told his students, “No one within ten miles of a temple should go hungry.” Following his guidance, we are making a humble attempt to do something for the wider community, and we think schools are the most important place to start with.
