Society for Performing Arts-NZ (SPANZ) is a volunteer-based Charitable Trust based in Christchurch, dedicated to promoting and honouring the traditions of India and New Zealand. At the heart of SPANZ’s mission is a deep appreciation of the universal languages of art, music, dance and literature, which transcend borders and bring people together. Through workshops, performances, and international exchange programs, SPANZ hopes to raise awareness and appreciation of Indian classical music and other art forms, foster dialogue between Indian and Western music, showcase Māori culture, and celebrate the diversity in both countries; to create a community united by a shared passion for the performing arts.
SPANZ is excited to announce the upcoming Triveni concert to be held in Christchurch (27th June) and Auckland (29th June). The milestone event promises a captivating journey into the realms of Hindustani and Carnatic music traditions, featuring legendary artists who have left an indelible mark on the global stage.
At the forefront of the Triveni concert is the esteemed Ustad Zakir Hussain, the pre-eminent classical tabla virtuoso of our time, and widely considered as a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement. He is the first musician from India to receive 3 Grammys at one time at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on 4th February, 2024, for Best Global Music Album, Best Global Music Performance and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. This recognition showcases Zakir Hussain’s unparalleled artistry that transcends cultural boundaries, captivating audiences worldwide.
Joining him on stage are acclaimed artists Kala Ramnath (Violin) and Jayanthi Kumaresh (Saraswati Veena), whose mastery of their respective instruments adds depth and richness to the musical ensemble.
With its blend of instrumental mastery, Triveni promises an enriching experience for both Western and Indian music enthusiasts, fostering cross-cultural appreciation and dialogue.
This monumental event marks the first-ever performance together in New Zealand by these esteemed artists. The Triveni concert goes beyond Auckland to embrace the vibrant cultural scene of Christchurch, underscoring SPANZ’s dedication to inclusivity and accessibility. Christchurch will be the first venue among the two cities to witness the brilliance of these maestros in unison.
By bringing this concert to Christchurch, SPANZ aims to enrich the city’s cultural journey and strengthen its position as a dynamic cultural hub.
As we eagerly anticipate the Triveni concert, SPANZ calls upon all music lovers to show their support by purchasing tickets to this unforgettable event. By attending the concert, audiences will not only enjoy an evening of beautiful music, but also support SPANZ’s mission of promoting cultural diversity and fostering connections between communities. Join us in celebrating the universal language of music and the rich tapestry of cultural heritage that binds us all together. “SPANZ would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere appreciation to the Indian High Commission in New Zealand and Her Excellency Ms. Neeta Bhushan for their gracious support and sponsorship of this extraordinary concert.”
