The Bihar Jharkhand Association of New Zealand (BJANZ) brought an explosion of colour, culture, and community spirit to Auckland with its grand celebration of Phagua Nav Varsh Mahotsav 2026. Held on Saturday, 21 February, at the Mt. Roskill War Memorial Hall, the event transformed the venue into a vibrant hub of festivity, welcoming hundreds of families and friends from across New Zealand’s Indian diaspora. The Mahotsav seamlessly combined two cherished occasions—Holi, the Festival of Colours, and Nav Varsh, the traditional Hindu New Year into one unforgettable cultural celebration.

Under the leadership of President Amit Verma, and with the dedicated efforts of organising team members Shalini Alok and Rani Singh, the event was thoughtfully curated to reflect the authentic traditions of Bihar and Jharkhand. Their commitment and teamwork ensured that every detail from décor to performances captured the true spirit of the festival while creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for all attendees
.Beginning at 12:30 PM, the hall resonated with rhythmic folk melodies, vibrant dhol beats, and energetic traditional dance performances that showcased the rich cultural heritage of the region. Guests arrived in elegant ethnic attire, with women adorned in intricately embroidered sarees and salwar suits, and men dressed in colourful kurtas and traditional ensembles. The festive mood was evident from the outset, as warm greetings of “Happy Holi” and “Nav Varsh ki Shubhkamnayein” echoed throughout the venue.
A highlight of the afternoon was the symbolic playing of colours. Clouds of pink, yellow, and green filled the air, transforming the celebration into a joyful tapestry of unity and happiness. The deeper meaning of Holi—the triumph of good over evil, the arrival of spring, and the breaking down of social barriers—was beautifully reflected in the way people of all ages mingled freely. In those vibrant moments, strangers became friends and friends felt like family, united in shared celebration.

Community leaders emphasised that Phagua Nav Varsh Mahotsav is far more than a cultural programme; it serves as a vital connection to heritage for those living far from their homeland. President Amit Verma highlighted the importance of preserving traditions while building a strong, supportive community in New Zealand. Organisers Shalini Alok and Rani Singh expressed pride in seeing the younger generation enthusiastically participate in dances, songs, and rituals, ensuring that the cultural legacy of Bihar and Jharkhand continues to flourish abroad.
Many attendees described the celebration as a heartfelt homecoming. The blend of music, dance, colours, and festive rituals recreated the warmth and joy of celebrations back in India, strengthening bonds within the community while showcasing its vibrant traditions within New Zealand’s diverse multicultural landscape.
The success of Phagua Nav Varsh Mahotsav 2026 was made possible through the generous support of sponsors, volunteers, and dedicated community members. As an incorporated organisation, BJANZ remains steadfast in its mission to preserve, promote, and pass on the rich cultural heritage of Bihar and Jharkhand fostering unity, belonging, and cultural pride for generations to come. -TIN Bureau
