First UP Diwas celebrated in New Zealand with pride and unity

The first-ever UP Diwas celebration in New Zealand on Sunday 25 January at Jalsa Indian eatery at Mission Bay marked a historic and meaningful milestone for the Uttar Pradesh community and the wider Indian diaspora. Organised by the Consulate General of India in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Association of New Zealand (UPANZ), the event drew a houseful audience and laid the foundation for a new annual cultural tradition overseas.
The strong turnout reflected the deep pride and enduring connection many community members maintain with Uttar Pradesh despite living far from their homeland. Families, community leaders and dignitaries gathered with enthusiasm, united by a shared sense of identity and belonging.
Guests were welcomed with soft background music, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The programme began with the Master of Ceremonies outlining the proceedings to ensure smooth coordination for the packed audience.
The evening opened on a patriotic note with the Indian National Anthem, followed by the Uttar Pradesh State Song, blending national pride with regional identity. A welcome address highlighted the significance of UP Diwas and its relevance for overseas Indians.
Rakesh Maihar, President of UPANZ, spoke on the importance of celebrating Uttar Pradesh Foundation Day beyond India’s borders. His address led into an engaging audio-visual presentation tracing the state’s journey since its formation on 24 January 1950, highlighting its contributions to India’s political leadership and achievements in culture, sports and science.
The ceremonial lighting of the lamp added grace to the occasion and was followed by an address from the Chief Guest, Dr Madan Mohan Sethi, Consul General of India in Auckland, who spoke on Uttar Pradesh’s cultural richness and the role of community organisations in preserving heritage abroad.
Distinguished guests including Veer Khar, President of NZICA, Members of Parliament Carlos Cheung and Parmjeet Parmar, and Sandeep Khetan, Managing Director of Bank of Baroda New Zealand, shared reflections on multicultural harmony and the contribution of the Indian diaspora.
An interactive Kahoot session based on the presentation engaged the audience, combining learning with entertainment. The cultural programme continued with karaoke performances, fostering joy and togetherness, followed by the distribution of certificates for initiatives such as Millets, Ramathon and Kahoot.
Anurag Rasela, Patron of UPANZ, delivered a thoughtful address on unity, cultural continuity and leadership within the diaspora. The formal programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Kashika Singh, Vice President of UPANZ, acknowledging the support of dignitaries, organisers, volunteers and sponsors.
The evening concluded with dinner and informal interaction, allowing guests to connect and celebrate. The inaugural UP Diwas celebration stood as the beginning of a lasting tradition, honouring the legacy of Uttar Pradesh while strengthening cultural ties in New Zealand. -TIN Bureau
