The Government of India announced on 19 January 2026 the appointment of Muanpuii Saiawi (IFS: 2005) as the next High Commissioner of India to New Zealand. She is currently serving as a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and is expected to take up her new role soon.

Saiawi will replace Neeta Bhushan, who has been India’s High Commissioner to New Zealand since 2022. Bhushan joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1994 and has had a distinguished diplomatic career, with postings in countries including Japan, Bangladesh, Germany, the UAE, and the United States.

A High Commissioner is the senior diplomatic representative of one Commonwealth country in another. The role includes managing diplomatic relations, strengthening trade and cultural ties, overseeing consular services, and acting as the main link between the governments of the two nations.

Saiawi’s appointment comes at a significant time, as India and New Zealand continue to deepen their bilateral relationship. The two countries recently concluded talks on a Free Trade Agreement, highlighting growing cooperation across economic and strategic areas.

The move also underlines India’s focus on New Zealand as an important partner in the Pacific region. Saiawi is expected to play a key role in further strengthening collaboration between the two countries across multiple sectors.

The exact date when Saiawi will assume her duties in New Zealand has not yet been announced.
